Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked in the evening shift as a nurse, so she could follow her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay developed a social conscious through her mother. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembered being told to examine the garbage of the home of a juror. As a result of her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior publicity assistant in a tiny film studio following her graduation from the college. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
